Understanding about Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis
What is PrEP?
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a highly effective HIV prevention method for individuals who do not have HIV but are at increased risk of exposure. It involves taking a daily medication that helps prevent HIV from establishing itself in the body.
- The medication contains two antiretroviral drugs also used to treat HIV. When taken consistently, PrEP can significantly reduce the risk of HIV infection from sexual activity or injection drug use.
- PrEP is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive prevention strategy, including condom use and regular health screenings. Individuals taking PrEP must commit to daily use and routine follow-up visits with a healthcare provider every three (3) months.
Who Should Consider PrEP?
PrEP is recommended for individuals who are HIV-negative and at substantial risk for HIV infection. This may include:
- Individuals in an ongoing relationship with an HIV-positive partner
- Gay or bisexual men who have had unprotected anal sex or been diagnosed with an STI within the past six (6) months
- Men who have sex with both men and women
- Heterosexual men and women who do not consistently use condoms with partners of unknown HIV status who may be at higher risk
- Individuals who have injected drugs in the past six (6) months and have shared needles or equipment
- Individuals who have recently participated in drug treatment programs
A healthcare provider can help determine if PrEP is appropriate based on your individual risk factors.
PrEP vs. PEP
PrEP is designed for ongoing prevention. If you have had a recent high-risk exposure (such as unprotected sex, needle sharing, or sexual assault), Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) may be appropriate.
- PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure
- It is used as an emergency prevention method, not for ongoing protection

Important Considerations
While PrEP is highly effective in preventing HIV, it does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as:
- Syphilis
- Gonorrhea
- Chlamydia
It also does not prevent Hepatitis C or infections related to injection drug use. Regular testing and preventive practices are still essential.
